Marriage was ‘rock’ to Winston Churchill, says David Starkey

Sir Winston Churchill’s marriage was a vital part of his whole life, according to a major new documentary fronted by Dr David Starkey.

Sir Winston was married to Clementine for over 50 years and their marriage only ended when the former Prime Minister died in 1965.

Speaking in a Channel 4 documentary Dr Starkey said Sir Winston was himself the “beneficiary of a deeply happy marriage”.

Rock

And in the programme, which focuses on both Sir Winston and his ancestor John Churchill, Dr Starkey said their marriages were “the rock upon which their whole lives were built”.

In the three-part documentary, entitled The Churchills, Dr Starkey told of how Sir Winston proposed to Clementine Hozier at Blenheim Palace.

They married on 12 September 1908 at St Margaret’s Church in Westminster, London.

Survived

Sir Winston was survived by Clementine who died in 1977.

The programme is available here until 25th August.
