Investigation after 23 week baby found alive in Mexico morgue

An investigation has been launched after a 23 week old baby was discovered alive around six hours after being declared deceased.

The unnamed baby was found breathing in a morgue refrigerator when an undertaker and the child’s father came to collect his body before the funeral. It is claimed he was found to have no vital signs after birth.

Hospital staff at the La Margarita hospital in Mexico said the child is currently receiving care, and a governmental organisation confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Alive

Miguel Angel Flores, owner of funeral home Funeraria Flores, said: “When we arrived we realised it was crying and moving.”

He added: “I can’t understand how he didn’t die while he was there. The fridge it was in is normally used to keep the limbs of amputees. I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”

In the UK, it is legal to have an abortion for most reasons up to 24 weeks, or up to birth when the unborn child is thought to have a disability.
