MP: Marriage is good for society, while ‘cult of individualism’ is ‘destructive’

An MP has spoken out on the importance of marriage for a healthy society, and said a societal focus on ‘individualism’ has proven “destructive”.

Danny Kruger, the MP for East Wiltshire, spoke to The House magazine about his views and highlighted how society is “suffering” due to the policies that have weakened marriage, such as no-fault divorce.

He is a prominent opponent of assisted suicide and stated: “I will oppose any assisted dying bill because I don’t think it’s possible to craft a safe one”.

Marriage framework

Kruger said: “Marriage traditionally was the means by which sexual relations between men and women were regulated, and I think we are suffering from having a totally unregulated sexual economy.

“I’m not interested in your love life, or anything about your personal life – that is your business. But I am interested in the framework in which you make your decisions, and I’d like the framework to be more pro-social. If you want – most people do want – to settle down with one person to have children, we should make that easier.”

He emphasised that government policy is “critically important to the way families form”.

Destructive philosophies

The Reform MP lamented the fact that decriminalisation of abortion was passed in the House of Commons, explaining that it sends “a very, very strong signal that it is acceptable to abort a viable baby at nine months”.

He noted: “The fact it happened the same week as the assisted dying bill just struck me as a very, very dark episode in our national life.”

Yet, Kruger commented that society is turning away from “the cult of the independent individual” as it has become apparent “how empty that philosophy is and how destructive it is of society”.

Instead, he said, people are turning to institutions like the family that “give us meaning and identity and security and a sense of belonging”.
