A multidisciplinary service for patients damaged by ‘gender affirming treatment’ is to be established in Texas.
In a settlement reached with state Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Detransition Clinic will be funded for the first five years by the previously pro-trans Texas Children’s Hospital.
Under the terms of the agreement, which follows an investigation by state officials, Texas Children’s agreed to pay $10 million for carrying out “illegal” trans-procedures, abandon “transitioning” gender-confused patients, and sack five doctors “who performed harmful medical interventions”.
‘Ideologically-motivated’
A Press Release from Paxton’s Office announced: “This Detransition Clinic will help patients reverse the damage caused by ideologically-motivated physicians who harmed patients by performing dangerous medical interventions for the purpose of ‘transitioning’ them.”
The Attorney General said: “Today is a monumental day in the fight to stop the radical transgender movement. This historic settlement reflects an institutional and fundamental cultural shift away from radical ‘gender’ ideology.”
He also applauded Texas Children’s “for changing course and committing to being a part of the solution” by agreeing to create “a first-of-its kind” service.
Lack of evidence
Earlier this year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons announced that it will no longer recommend transgender procedures for children, becoming the first major medical association in the US to do so.
In a statement obtained by The Washington Post, the group advised its members that trans-affirming chest, genital and facial surgery should be delayed until a client is 19 years old.
The new guidance explains that there is “insufficient evidence demonstrating a favourable risk-benefit ratio” on such procedures, in addition to a “substantial uncertainty” about the long-term effects of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.
According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, mastectomies currently account for the majority of trans-affirming surgeries for under-18s.
