Superhero to be outed as gay, after Obama’s switch

A major comic book superhero like Superman, Batman, or Robin is in line to be turned gay by the characters’ owners, DC Comics.

The decision, say the publishers, compares to the “evolving” support for gay marriage announced recently by US President, Barack Obama.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio had originally planned to introduce a new superhero character, who would be openly gay.

Outed

But the owners changed their mind and, in June, they will announce that one of their established and most identifiable male superheroes will be outed as gay.

Senior Vice President of Sales, Bob Wayne, said DiDio’s view “had evolved”, comparing the shift to Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

Wedding

Following the move by DC Comics, rival comic book publisher Marvel has said a gay wedding will feature in one if its storylines next month.

Marvel says its gay character, Jean-Paul Beaubier, will marry Kyle Jinadu in the pages of ‘Astonishing X-Men’ No. 51, due out on 20 June.
