Ireland’s three-day reflection period for an abortion has been scrapped by TDs.
Last night, deputies backed a Sinn Féin Bill to remove one of the few safeguards that remain for the unborn in Ireland by 86 votes to 70.
Between 2019 and 2024, according to Health Service Executive data, over 10,000 women who had requested an abortion did not return to see their GP to go through with it following the three-day reflection period.
Protect the vulnerable
On Tuesday, speaking ahead of the vote, Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD dismissed the statutory wait as an “arbitrary delay” and claimed it “should never have been introduced”.
But Independent Deputy Carol Nolan expressed astonishment at “the moral incoherence of a party that claims to care about Ireland’s future while actively working to ensure that thousands of Irish children will never have one”.
Michael Healy-Rae, also an Independent, questioned why politicians were in “such a rush” to dismantle an important safeguard, especially as it had been presented to voters as a check and balance in the legislation to legalise abortion following the 2018 referendum.
Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín TD lamented the fact that 10,852 lives had been ended by abortion last year and urged TDs “to make sure that one of the last protections that exists in this State in terms of the most vulnerable is protected”.
Sanctity of Life
The Christian Institute’s Director, Ciarán Kelly, said: “Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald claims the mandatory three-day waiting period has had ‘serious consequences’ and needs to be scrapped.
“But this abandons compassion and ignores the fact that vulnerable women value the reflection time given to them by the law. The truth is that this one, small safeguard may have saved thousands of lives.”
“As Christians, we must continue to bear witness to the truth of God’s Word and the sanctity of human life. The unborn do not have a voice of their own – we must speak up on their behalf.”
