Scots minister in TV debate with Tatchell on marriage

Free Church minister David Robertson will debate homosexual rights campaigner Peter Tatchell about same-sex marriage on a Christian television channel tonight.

Revd Robertson, who is also the Director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, said the discussion about redefining marriage is just starting.

“There are those who think that the debate about same-sex marriage is over. I disagree – in many ways it has only just begun”, he said.

Fundamental

“As the social and economic consequences of this fundamental change to the way our society is structured become increasingly clear, the debate about what marriage is and how society should be governed will continue.”

“I admire Peter Tatchell for his strong convictions and his commitment to his fundamental beliefs.

“But I think that these are fundamentally wrong and all the more dangerous because of that”, he added.

Audience

The programme, called ‘The Future of Marriage’, is to be broadcast live on Revelation TV and will include an hour-long head-to-head between Robertson and Tatchell, followed by questions from viewers.

Mr Tatchell has described the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in England and Wales as a “very welcome and important advance” but said he is against marriage as an institution.

“For me, the campaign for same-sex marriage has always been premised on the principle of equality, rather than support for marriage per se”, he explained earlier this year.

Feminist

“I’m no great fan of wedlock. I share the feminist critique and would not want to get married”, he added.

The debate is scheduled for 9pm tonight on Revelation TV, and will be streamed live online.
