The Mayor of London has pledged £100,000 of taxpayers’ money in a campaign to host an international LGBT parade.
The capital first held WorldPride in 2012, and Sadiq Khan has now backed a pro-trans coalition’s attempt to hold the ten-day event in 2032.
Earlier this year, the Mayor of London was criticised following news that he had given £125,000 to London Pride and £30,000 to Black Pride, in addition to spending almost £20,000 on a Pride reception.

Social media users questioned Khan’s pledge, with one posting on X: “Public money should not be used to host this event. If the community wants to host it they should pay for it.” Another added: “We don’t want it we have way more important things to spend our money on.”
In June, it was revealed that the British Council had funded eight LGBT activists’ trip to Brazil to participate in the world’s largest pride parade.
Among the trip’s aims, the Government quango reported that it wanted “to foster partnerships between Pride organisations, and to increase the visibility of the UK LGBTQIA+ culture”.
Last year, the British Council received £163 million in grants from the public purse and were dependent on a £197 million government loan. According to the Belfast News Letter, the four-day trip cost £12,880.
