A baby boy born at just 23 weeks and one day is doing well, his mum has reported.
Roisin was admitted to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent after her waters broke at 22 weeks. When Kilian was delivered by caesarean section a week later, he weighed a mere 1lb 5ozs.
In Britain, abortion is available for most reasons up to 24 weeks, the age at which babies are deemed to be ‘viable’ outside the womb.
Precious lives
Without the support of staff, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team, Roisin believes Kilian would not have survived, and she thanked them for giving him “a chance at life”.
She continued: “Every single professional is amazing and as soon as I walked in I felt calm, which is a very special feeling.”
Neonatal Sister Lydia Perrow said that on NICU they care for babies from as young as 22 weeks. She added: “These babies, there is no word to describe them. They go through so much. And they deserve the best.”
‘Harrowing’
New statistics for England and Wales have shown that abortions increased by 11 per cent on the previous year, and are the highest they have ever been.
Government figures show that in 2023 – the latest figures available – 300 abortions took place after the usual 24-week limit, with ten of those being for children deemed to have Down’s syndrome.
The Christian Institute’s Head of Communications Angus Saul described the figures as “absolutely harrowing”.
