Parents battle state to protect gender-confused daughter

The parents of a US girl taken from them after ‘untrue and unsupported’ accusations of abuse and neglect are seeking to prevent her being given cross-sex hormones.

Joseph and Arlene Kutzko, who live in the US state of Massachusetts, accuse their daughter’s school of secretly “counselling” Sophie about ‘changing sex’ before she was removed from her home by the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

The couple, who have not seen their 17-year-old daughter since 2024, are now in a court battle to prevent her being given masculinising hormones.

‘We didn’t know’

Mr Kutzko reported that they were led to believe after-school sessions were to improve their daughter’s maths, not to discuss transgender ideology.

“We didn’t find out until after Sophie was removed,” he said. “It came on like a tornado.”

Lawyer Vernadette Broyles, who is representing the parents, stated: “The school began to use male pronouns and non-binary pronouns to refer to her by a male name in these secret counseling sessions that we suspect to affirm this rejection of her sex. And all of this was happening completely secret to the parents.”

Accusations

The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough “unequivocally” deny the accusations, while the DCF accuse the parents of abusing their daughter.

Joseph was previously arrested over the claims, but Broyles called them “untrue” and “unsupported”.

“The only thing that’s left is an allegation of neglect that has never been described. We do not even know the specific reasons for this unclear neglect charge against them.”

The US Department of Education is investigating whether the school socially transitioned Sophie without her parents’ consent.
