One million march for marriage in Mexico

Over a million Mexicans attended nationwide rallies on Saturday, in support of traditional marriage.

The marches, calling for marriage and the family to be protected from politically correct ideology, took place across 122 Mexican cities.

President Enrique Peña Nieto is currently exploring proposals to bring same-sex marriage into the Mexican Constitution.

Defend the family

The rallies were organised by the pro-family activist organisation Frente Nacional Por La Familia (“National Front for the Family”).

Marco Tulio Mendoza, director of the group, said: “The purpose is to defend the family; what we are proposing is the protection of marriage and family.

“The parent has the right to educate their children according to their convictions, and that education be free of ideologies.”

Current status

Gay marriage is currently allowed in Mexico City and several other states, but the proposed changes would allow it nationwide.

The group has warned that these proposals would lead to the collapse of the family and promote homosexuality, transgenderism, and sexual activity.

It is planning to hold a Grand National March in Mexico City on 24 September.
