One million evangelicals join ‘March for Jesus’ in Brazil

More than one million evangelical Christians in Brazil have taken part in a “March for Jesus” in Sao Paulo.

The event, organised by the Reborn in Christ Church, was billed as the “largest Christian event in the world”.

Police estimated that the number of people taking part in Saturday’s march was at least one million, but organisers said it was far higher.

Annual

Christians, from hundreds of evangelical churches and non-denominational groups, travelled to the city from all over the country to take part in the annual march.

According to census results from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics the evangelical population of Brazil stood at 42.3 million in 2010.

It had increased by 16 million people over the ten-year period from 2000 to 2010.

Response

The “March for Jesus” has taken place annually since 1993 and is partly a response to the large homosexual march that takes place in the city.
