Nevada Governor: ‘I will not sign assisted suicide Bill’

The Governor of the US state of Nevada has derailed an assisted suicide Bill, stating: “I will not sign it”.

It is the sixth time this Bill has been put forward in Nevada. The Bill’s sponsor, Joe Dalia, pulled the proposals following Governor Lombardo’s statement, but committed to bringing it forward again at a later date.

In the UK, a final vote on Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is expected on 20 June to decide whether the Bill progresses to the Lords. And in Scotland, a committee of MSPs will consider Liam McArthur’s Bill after it passed Stage 1. Both dangerous Bills could be defeated if only a fraction of those who voted in favour switch sides.

‘I will not sign it’

Governor Lombardo posted on social media: “Expansions in palliative care services and continued improvements in advanced pain management make the end-of-life provisions in AB346 unnecessary, and I would encourage the 2025 Legislature to disregard AB346 because I will not sign it.”

Assemblyman Dalia commented: “Our goal from day one was to bring a bipartisan bill that got through both houses in a position where the governor would be comfortable signing it. Coming into this deadline day, we just didn’t feel like we were going to get there and bridge that divide”.

He added: “We’re not deterred; we’re going to keep pressing forward. I think we’re confident that we’ll find a way to get there but this is the sixth time this (bill) has been run. I’m going to keep the fight alive”.

National day of prayer

The Christian Institute and other Evangelical groups are calling on Christians to again unite in a national day of prayer against the assisted suicide Bills at Westminster and Holyrood.

On Wednesday 11 June, the Institute, Affinity, CARE, the Christian Medical Fellowship, Christian Concern and the Evangelical Alliance are inviting Christians across the UK to pray about this life-and-death issue and also to encourage their church and friends to join too.

The Christian Institute’s Deputy Director Simon Calvert said: “We must ask God to open more politicians’ eyes to the bitter reality that ‘assisted dying’ means helping suicidal people to kill themselves. We thank God that many are already opposing these Bills and we can pray that more will find the courage to speak out.”
