Named Person victim says scheme would invade privacy

A mother of two has been separated from her Highland home after suffering at the hands of a council that operates a pilot Named Person scheme.

Donna Mackie and her two teenage sons now live in Edinburgh, having left the Highland Council area where the scheme is already in operation.

The family moved after finding out that officials had been meeting about their situation, without talking to them.

The Named Person scheme is set to be rolled out across the whole of Scotland by 2016, and Donna has major concerns.

Intervene

Under the plans, a Named Person will be assigned to every child between birth and 18-years-old. They will be able to share information with a wide range of public authorities and may intervene without parental consent.

Speaking to the NO2NP campaign, which is supported by The Christian Institute, Donna explained that her oldest son – Jozef – has a serious medical condition.

Donna said that many health and education professionals were involved in the care of her son.

However, Donna and her husband were left out of meetings where the professionals discussed his situation.

Betrayed

Donna later discovered that she had been described as being too vigilant a parent, and Jozef was called a “school refuser”. The situation left her feeling “betrayed”, she said.

Since the family have moved, Donna has expressed concern about the Named Person scheme being rolled out nationally.

She said: “We feel as a family that the Named Person process is going to be an invasion of privacy for the whole of the family”.

Helpless

Last week the NO2NP campaign was launched in Edinburgh, featuring discussion from parents, journalists and academics on the Scottish Government’s plans.

The campaign, backed by the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, Schoolhouse, CARE and The Christian Institute, has raised £30,000 to fund a legal challenge.

Colin Hart, Director of The Christian Institute said: “The state seems intent on usurping the role of parents and reducing them to helpless spectators in the lives of their children.

“Mums and dads should be very afraid of this kind of Big Brother invasion into their lives and their homes.”
