Experts baulk at plan for ‘LGBT voices’ in all Scottish subjects

Critics have hit out at new guidance which tells teachers in Scotland to shoehorn “LGBT voices” into all subjects.

‘Curriculum Inclusion: LGBT Mapping Across Curriculum for Excellence’ tells teachers to discuss the “hidden lives” of historical figures “rumoured” to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

The new guidance was produced by LGBT Youth Scotland, the same group behind misleading guidance on transgenderism in schools.

Shoehorning

The guide offers examples of how LGBT issues can be forcibly inserted into various subjects.

Maths questions include: “Of x people, xx% were out as LGBT to their doctor. How many people is that?”

In science, teachers are told that students could study “heat transfer in a household with parents in a same-sex relationship”.

The 16-page document also warns: “Teachers should be prepared to challenge discriminatory views”.

‘Flabbergasted’

The guidance has drawn criticism from a number of campaign groups.

Chloe Westley of the Taxpayers’ Alliance said: “Families will be flabbergasted that instead of investing in staff or teaching resources, the Government has commissioned an expensive 16-page report that recommends shoehorning social issues into subjects such as maths.”

The Family Education Trust said: “This curriculum appears to have less to do with learning and more about promoting the political agenda of a forceful minority.”

And Chris McGovern of the Campaign for Real Education said: “Addressing the decline in academic standards should be the priority. There is a danger that well-intentioned PC notions are distracting teachers from that goal.”
