Employment Tribunal rules against Christian doctor

A Christian doctor who challenged transgender ideology at work says he will appeal after losing an Employment Tribunal.

Dr David Mackereth, who has worked for the NHS for nearly 30 years, was in training for a disability assessor post at the Department for Work and Pensions.

But he was forced out of his job after saying he could not call a man “Mrs” or “she”.

Genesis

Dr Mackereth challenged the decision with the assistance of the Christian Legal Centre.

Lawyer Michael Phillips said the Christian doctor’s belief rested in Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

But the Tribunal ruled “belief in Genesis 1:27, lack of belief in transgenderism and conscientious objection to transgenderism in our judgment are incompatible with human dignity and conflict with the fundamental rights of others”.

Dr Mackereth said he was determined to appeal.

Grace and truth

Dr Mackereth added that the ruling undermined freedom of speech and freedom of thought.

Andrea Williams, Chief Executive of the Christian Legal Centre, said the truth about mankind being made male and female “is repeated throughout the Bible, including by Jesus Christ himself”.

“People who suffer from gender dysphoria must be treated lovingly, but not telling the truth to these vulnerable people is unloving.

“Men cannot become women nor can women become men.”
