‘Don’t abort your babies, even if doctors say so’

A Puerto Rican rapper and his wife have criticised doctors who recommend aborting unborn babies who have been diagnosed with severely life-limiting conditions.

Their daughter Victoria was born earlier in September with the rare genetic condition Patau’s Syndrome.

But Juan Luis Morera Luna, who goes by his stage name Wisin, and his wife Yomaira immediately rejected the idea of abortion.

Plea

In a powerful statement made on television, Yomaira pleaded for the lives of children like Victoria to be protected.

She said: “Doctors try to convince you that abortion is right, but that’s not the path God wants us to choose, because we are not the ones to decide the life and death of a human being, even our own children.”

She added that she and her husband, one of Latin America’s biggest music stars, say they and their other children will love Victoria as she is.

He requested privacy in the matter, but asked for prayer for his family.

Protest

Patau’s Syndrome, or Trisomy 13, affects about one in 5,000 pregnancies and can lead to severe mental and physical impairment.

The average life expectancy of babies born with Patau’s Syndrome is seven days, but five to ten per cent live past a year. Some have been known to reach their teenage years.

Earlier this month over 100,000 pro-life supporters protested against proposals to legalise abortion in Chile.

The law would allow doctors to end the lives of unborn babies conceived as a result of rape, or where the child has a condition deemed “incompatible with life”, such as Patau’s Syndrome.
