“Faith in God” is what makes me happy, prominent commentator Peter Hitchens declared on the BBC’s Question Time last night.

He was responding to a question about the Government’s happiness survey.

Peter Hitchens, a commentator for the Mail on Sunday, responded with a simple declaration of his faith, saying: “Faith in God”.

Relationship

Shirley Williams, a Liberal Democrat Peer, said: “The best things in life are free, so family relationships, friends and the countryside.”

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, said that what made her happy was “a good solid relationship with somebody else”.

Ed Balls, the Shadow Chancellor, said for him, it is “easily seeing our children growing up and flourishing”.

Kids

He added that “seeing your kids grow up and develop is the most fabulous thing in the world.”

Benjamin Zephaniah, Professor of Poetry and Creative Writing at Brunel University, said: “What makes me happy is breathing, and that may sound kind of crazy but I wake up in the morning, I’m happy in my life and I don’t expect too much from this life.”

Earlier this year Peter Hitchens was jeered by a Question Time audience when he warned that more sex education caused more STIs and underage pregnancies.

Mr Hitchens said that the problem of sexualisation arose when Britain ditched its Christian heritage and became a post-Lady-Chatterley society where sex was “like tennis” – something people simply did for pleasure.
