The BBC has announced a four-part series on the life of Jesus Christ which will include perspectives from other faiths.
The series, which is set to air in 2027, plans to feature contributions from secular historians and Jewish and Muslim faith leaders, as well as Christian scholars.
It called the programme “ambitious”, and said it would draw on historical research, archaeological discoveries, and expert testimony, to “expand and sharpen our understanding of one the most influential people in history”.
‘Shaped the world’
The BBC’s Head of Religion and Ethics, TV, Daisy Scalchi, said the programme is a “testament to the BBC’s commitment to religious programming that deepens our understanding of each other and the world around us”.
She called Jesus Christ “one of the most recognised and influential figures in human history”, but claimed, “what we know about him comes from remarkably few sources”.
Tom Garton, the creative director at Wonderhood Studios, which is producing the series, stated: “Few lives have shaped the world as profoundly as that of Jesus Christ and, for Christians, he is far more than a figure of history: he is the Son of God.”
‘Baffling’
The Institute’s Head of Communications Angus Saul remarked: “If people want to know about the life of Jesus, I encourage them to read the Bible.
“From Genesis to Revelation, God’s word attests to his remarkable and wonderful person and deeds. And unlike a TV show, it gives an entirely true and reliable picture of the Son of God.”
