Anniversary of Roe v Wade repeal: ‘Life is winning in America’

US pro-lifers have gathered in Washington DC to celebrate last year’s overturning of Roe v Wade.

Marking the Supreme Court ruling on 24 June 2022, which returned abortion law to state legislatures, campaigners vowed to continue their fight to see unborn lives protected across America.

In April, #WeCount estimated 32,260 fewer abortions took place in the six months following the judgment, suggesting more than 60,000 babies’ lives have been saved from abortion over the course of the year.

‘Image bearers’

Addressing the National Celebrate Life Day Rally in the capital, Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins said: “Life is indeed winning in America”.

While noting that 25 states now have laws that protect the unborn, she expressed her longing for “an America where every human being is recognised as the unrepeatable person that they are” and called for nationwide “protection at conception”.

Lila Rose, founder and President of pro-life group Live Action, urged those gathered to seek a society “that truly values all human life” and “upholds the rights of our most vulnerable, the preborn”.

And Focus on the Family’s Nicole Hunt spoke of the “inherent dignity and value” of every person, including those in the womb, as “image bearers of God”. “Friends”, she said, “please keep advocating for life”.

‘Precious lives’

Former US Vice President Mike Pence told the rally: “As we celebrate this great new anniversary, let us here resolve that we will work, and we will pray as never before to advance the cause of life and the laws of the land in every state in America.”

The Institute’s Ciarán Kelly remarked: “What an astonishing turnaround we’ve witnessed in the US, one truly worth celebrating.

“Tragically, here in the UK, the number of lives lost to abortion rises year on year, and legislation becomes ever more hostile toward the unborn child and those who advocate for them.

“Human life has intrinsic value – from conception. So we shall continue to pursue our goal of these precious lives being afforded the legal protections they deserve.”
