Abortion is a matter of ‘human rights’, claims Council of Europe official

The Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe has claimed that abortion is an issue of “equality” and “human rights”.

Nils Muižnieks made the controversial remarks as he urged Malta to liberalise its pro-life laws.

Malta currently has one of the strongest pro-life laws of any country in Europe.

Abortion claims

Muižnieks claimed it was “clear” that “women’s human rights cannot be protected without ensuring their effective access to safe and legal abortion care”.

He called for a new law to bring in abortion on demand.

He did not address the human rights of the unborn child which are currently protected under Maltese law.

In Great Britain there have now been almost 9 million abortions since the 1967 Abortion Act was passed.
