Autumn Lectures 2016, Dr Andy Gemmill: Our Resurrection Hope

The Christian Institute’s annual Autumn Lectures series began yesterday with a talk by Dr Andy Gemmill, Director of the Pastor’s Training Course at Cornhill Scotland.

In line with this year’s theme ‘Our Living Hope’, Dr Gemmill spoke on the wonderful resurrection hope that Christians have in the Lord Jesus.

Using 1 Corinthians 15, he considered how the resurrection of Christ is inextricably linked with the past and future resurrection of those who are in Him.

As believers, he said, “we are in an extraordinary position”. Death waits for us as a certainty unless Christ returns – but we have already died to this world and risen to new life in Christ, and we will be physically resurrected one day if we fall asleep.

The church in Corinth struggled with this teaching on resurrection and this theology continues to challenge Christians today.

“Resurrection is hard to imagine. Death is difficult to think about.”

“We often long for something more tangible in life than the unseen”, said Dr Gemmill.

Paul’s lesson for the Corinthians was for them to wake up and give themselves to the work of the Lord – the one thing that death cannot destroy.

And this applies to us today. We can take heart that the tyranny of sin, law and death will one day be broken. For the believer, death leads to Glory.

We must face up to the reality of death but at the same time be confident in those things that are invisible and last forever.

You can order a copy of Dr Gemmill’s lecture on CD for £2.50. A special boxset of all this year’s lectures will also be available for £11.00, or on an MP3 CD for £4.
