Three newborns rescued in one week through Safe Haven Baby Boxes

Three newborn babies in the US have been safely rescued within one week thanks to the Safe Haven Baby Box initiative.

One baby was left at Woodlands Fire Department in Texas, with two others surrendered at undisclosed locations. Under the ‘safe havens’ scheme, babies may be anonymously handed over to responsible adults — or placed in a specially designed “baby box” — in specified locations.

Since its introduction in 2015, about 60 babies have been left by mothers in crisis between the 440 Safe Haven sites across 23 US states. The newborns are typically adopted within a month.

Babies cared for

Woodlands Fire Department Chief, Palmer Buck, said: “This Safe Haven Baby Box exists for moments exactly like this”.

He explained: “Today, a baby is safe because someone chose a secure and legal option during what was undoubtedly a difficult situation. We are grateful the system worked as intended and that the baby is now receiving the care they need.”

The Fire Chief added that the hardest part of the process “was convincing the firefighters that they had given the baby enough hugs”.

Protecting life

Brad Bailey, the Township Board Chairman, said: “Today’s news is a powerful reminder of why our community invested in this life-saving resource”.

He stated: “The Safe Haven Baby Box exists to protect the most vulnerable among us during an unimaginable crisis.

“Because this option was available, a child is safe today. We are grateful to our firefighters, first responders and everyone who helped make this resource available to our community.

“It reflects The Woodlands’ commitment to protecting life and ensuring help is available when it is needed most.”
