Christians welcome Executive’s climbdown on smacking

Colin Hart, Director of The Christian Institute said today:

“Christians across Scotland are delighted that the Executive has abandoned its plan to ban the smacking of children under three.”

“However, The Christian Institute is still concerned that the remaining proposals on physical punishment are confusing and that they will lead to innocent parents being prosecuted. The Scottish Parliament’s Justice 2 Committee has recognized that the ban on shaking and the use of implements is unclear. We believe that MSPs should now make clear what they are trying to do or ideally drop the proposals altogether.”

“The current law is perfectly adequate to protect children from abuse.”
