Same-sex marriage has “battered freedom” in every place it has been introduced, an atheist commentator has said.
Brendan O’Neill, editor of online magazine Spiked, warned that the redefinition of marriage is a “Trojan horse for the enforcement of a new morality”.
He made the comments after the introduction of a same-sex marriage Bill in Australia.
Freedom ‘battered
O’Neill criticised proponents of gay marriage who seek to draw a parallel between freedom and the redefinition of marriage.
He said, “everywhere gay marriage has been introduced it has battered freedom, not boosted it”.
“Love and marriage might go together like horse and carriage, but freedom and gay marriage certainly do not”, he continued.
Demanding moral acceptance
O’Neill referred to the case of Brendan Eich who lost his job as CEO of American internet giant Mozilla for his opposition to gay marriage. This was a clear example where “freedom to marry clearly trumps the freedom of conscience”, he added.
The commentator also referenced the introduction of same-sex marriage in France, where opponents became “ideological enemies” of the French state.
He described the agenda of the same-sex marriage lobby as demanding “psychological acceptance of gay marriage from all”.
Trojan horse
This “new institution”, invented by “tiny numbers of sharp-suited lawyers and agitators, is better seen as a Trojan horse for the enforcement of a new morality”, O’Neill added.
In conclusion, he criticised Senator David Leyonhjelm, the Australian politician who has introduced a gay marriage Bill at the Federal Parliament.
O’Neill said, “he thinks he’s striking a blow for liberty”, but actually he is completing a “tyranny kickstarted by the new authoritarians of the modern West”.
