‘Dead’ boy wakes up before doctors harvest organs

A boy in Alabama astounded doctors when he woke up just a day before his life support was to be ended, and his organs harvested.

Trenton McKinley, 13, suffered seven skull fractures when he was involved in a dune buggy accident with a friend in March.

He underwent several rounds of emergency surgery, suffered a cardiac arrest, and was medically ‘dead’ for 15 minutes.

‘Vegetable’

His mother, Jennifer, told of the heart-breaking ordeal, believing her son would not survive.

Doctors told her he would never be normal again, saying that the oxygen deprivation would affect him so badly, that he would be “a vegetable” if he even survived.

The teenager was declared brain dead and was barely breathing, and so his mother decided to donate his organs to other children in need of transplants.

God

However, the day before his life support was set to be switched off, Trenton began to show signs of brain activity. He began to breathe on his own, and when he woke, was able to speak in full sentences.

He spoke of his near-death experience, and attributed his recovery to God.

He said: “There’s no other explanation but God. There’s no other way that I could have came back. Even the doctors said.”

Trenton is now home and walking with assistance, but still has a long way to go with his recovery.

He will have to return to hospital soon for doctors to reattach the missing part of his skull.
