The head of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) has said that she wants to see New York’s radical late-term abortion laws passed in the UK.
Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo signed the Reproductive Health Act into law last month, effectively allowing abortion up to birth for any reason in the state.
The move created huge controversy, but BPAS’s Chief Executive Ann Furedi called the move “a breakthrough for choice”.
Any-reason abortion
Writing for Spiked, Furedi said: “New York State has just signed into law an abortion-rights Bill that is close to what many of us have been campaigning for in the UK.”
“What we’d like in Britain is for politicians to accept what policymakers in New York have agreed”.
Britain’s law currently allows abortions up to 24 weeks – up to birth in cases where the child is deemed to have a life-limiting condition.
Hijack
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) said it “has been warning that what politicians in New York have done is very much what the abortion lobby here is attempting to achieve”.
“Ann Furedi and her allies in Parliament have made it clear that they are determined to go to any lengths (including hijacking a domestic abuse bill) to impose an equally extreme abortion regime here”.
Despite Furedi claiming that late-term abortions are a rarity, figures released from the Department of Health revealed that 15,000 babies have been killed at 20 weeks and over in England and Wales in the last five years.
