Belfast pro-life centre opens to counter abortion clinic

A pro-life healthcare centre has opened in Belfast to directly oppose Northern Ireland’s only private abortion clinic.

The Stanton Healthcare clinic is on the same street as the Marie Stopes branch, which was opened amid widespread criticism in 2012.

The pro-life centre is the first Stanton clinic to open outside of America, providing free medical support including ultrasounds and post-abortion counselling.

Launch

US Congressman Chris Smith officially opened the clinic at an official launch last week.

Stanton Healthcare says that over 90 per cent of women who are open to abortion but have an ultrasound at one of their clinics choose to give birth.

Abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland except to save the life of the mother, but a Marie Stopes abortion clinic opened in Belfast in October 2012.

Since then regular protests have been held outside by pro-life campaigners.
