When are the shows?
26th June - 1st July 2006
Who runs the theatre?
Fairfield Halls, which will be showing Jerry Springer the Opera, is owned by the London Borough of Croydon and managed by the company 'Fairfield (Croydon) Ltd'. Five of the company's directors are Croydon Councillors.
Public Money
The Council owns Fairfield Halls and for the year ended 3 April 2005 gave a grant of £331,361. (Report and Accounts, Fairfield (Croydon) Ltd, 3 April 2005, page 12.) Whilst "spending pressures" resulted in the Council stopping its grant for 2005/6, the Council is continuing to support the venue by funding £200,000 for modernisation and repair works (Croydon Council Press Release, Fairfield Halls and Croydon Council Look to the Future, 23 February 2005).
Equality Policy
The Council's equal opportunities policy states: "Each person's religious belief is a basic human right which must be treated with tolerance and respect. Taking someone else's god's name in vain (blasphemy)... can be offensive." The statement continues: "In service delivery, the Council will ensure sensitivity with regard to people's faiths and not deliver services in a way that is offensive." (Equal Opportunities Policy, Croydon Council, page 12)
Yet surely showing Jerry Springer the Opera is offensive and discriminatory. The Council would not allow a production which spitefully mocks Mohammed or derides Hindu beliefs in such a way.
