London’s partnership register

Since September it has been possible for homosexual couples in London to register their relationships in Ken Livingstone’s ‘London Partnerships Register’.

The Greater London Authority described it as ‘a step towards avoiding problems arising over housing, taxation, inheritance rights and family law.’(1)

Although it is openly admitted that registration does not give couples the same rights as marriage does, gay rights groups see it as major progress in their campaign for full ‘gay marriage’.

Other towns have now announced plans to run similar schemes, and the pressure on society to accept homosexual relationships as equal to marriage is growing.
