Institute Update Issue 2 - May 2002

Giving Christian comment to the national and local media

By Iain Bainbridge

The Christian Institute is regularly contacted by journalists for comment, sometimes in response to one of our briefings or a press release. In many cases, however, they just call us for our response to an issue in the news.

We have developed a reputation for giving a clear Christian perspective in a robust and well-reasoned manner. Journalists know that we can back up everything that we claim.

We are reluctant to turn down any opportunity to speak out publicly for Christian truth, whether to a local newspaper or on national radio or television. Being only five minutes away from the BBC and Tyne Tees studio we are able to respond quickly to requests for broadcast interviews.

Sometimes there are opportunities to talk about the gospel through current affairs issues. For example, over the past couple of years there have been calls for traditional Christian holidays such as Easter to be abandoned and replaced with secular public holidays. There have also been calls to restructure the school term, moving away from the Christian calendar. This gave the Institute several opportunities to talk clearly about the real meaning and significance of Easter on national radio and in national newspapers.
