Institute Update Issue 2 - May 2002

Volunteer, Denys, lends his computer experience
The man who makes our network work

It all started with an unexpected discussion at the bookstall of a Christian conference. It was then that retired Senior Technician at Newcastle University, Denys Burman, was chatting with Institute Director Colin Hart. As soon as Colin realised what Denys used to do for a living, he was quick to enlist his help as a volunteer.

“I was initially asked if I could come and fix a floppy disc drive. Then while I was there Colin asked if I could just link up a computer to another computer. Before I knew it, I was asked to advise the Institute on which server they should use.”

Denys celebrated his 70th birthday in April. He says he wants to help the Institute because he is a Christian and he thinks doing voluntary work is a good way to use his time.

“I install software and new hardware,” says Denys, “I also set up the backup system so if anything breaks all the work is saved. The demands of modern software means that we need to update computers every so often. But I don’t see how the Institute could do its work without computers.”

The Institute would like to thank Denys for all his selfless assistance over the years.
