Keep families free

Tuesday, 20 October 2009

Under new proposals for England a government official could enter your home, and question your child about what you teach them – and all without you being present. At the moment, this is being proposed for home-schooling families. But which families will be next?

Our main concerns

  • Increasing government control of family life.
  • Giving government officials power to question children without parents being present.
  • Forcing home-educating parents to register annually on a national government register.
  • Confusing child abuse with home education.
  • Eroding parents' freedom of choice over their own child's education.

Consultation on
the Badman Report

The consultation closed on 19 October 2009.

In the Bible and throughout our nation’s legal history it is parents who have responsibility for the education of their children. But the Government now wants to usurp the proper role of parents.

The Government wants to accept the recommendations of the Badman Report that home education should be formally regulated in England. Many parents can envisage circumstances where they would have to take their child out of school, if only for a short time. But under Government plans, parents who make this choice would be put on a national register, receive regular home visits from officials, and have to stay outside when their children are interviewed about what they are teaching them.
