Almost nine in ten Conservative candidates for the next election support a reduction in the upper time limit for abortion, a new survey claims.
ConservativeHome, an independent party website, has published a survey suggesting that 85 per cent of Tory hopefuls support a lower time limit.
A series of attempts to cut the limit were defeated in May when MPs voted on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.
Pro-life MPs are reportedly planning another attempt to ban abortions after 20 weeks by introducing a private member's Bill in 2010.
A recent poll of the public showed that seven in ten UK women want to see the abortion time limit cut. The same proportion of 24-35 year olds also support a reduction.
A spokesman for the Alive and Kicking pro-life group, Julia Millington, said: "There have been almost seven million abortions in Britain since 1967; now 200,000 a year and 600 per day. But the tide of public opinion against late abortions has turned."
