Pro-life MPs join forces
to curb late abortions

Last updated: 9 November 2007

Pro-life MPs are planning a cross-party coalition on abortion to reduce the 24-week upper time limit, according to The Daily Telegraph New window icon.

Talks are being held behind closed doors between Conservative and Labour party MPs who want to lower the abortion limit to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

An opportunity to change the law on abortion has been raised by the Government's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, introduced to Parliament on 8 November 2007.

However, at the same time pro-abortion MPs are likely to table amendments to make abortions under 20 weeks even easier.

Other controversial measures in the Bill include allowing animal-human embryos, genetically-modified babies, and IVF for lesbians.

The Bill receives its Second Reading in the House of Lords on 19 November 2007. It is not expected to reach the Commons until February 2008.

MPs have traditionally been allowed to vote on the issue of abortion according to conscience, rather than along party lines.
